Creating and Managing Locations
How to set up rooms, buildings, and storage areas in Ginkgo.
Locations in Ginkgo represent the physical places where your items live. You can be as broad or as specific as suits your home.
Creating a location
- Tap Locations in the navigation
- Tap + Add location
- Enter a name
- Optionally: choose a parent location (to nest it inside another location)
- Optionally: add an emoji icon to make it easier to identify at a glance
- Tap Save
Location types
There’s no strict hierarchy — any location can be nested inside any other. Common patterns:
Flat list: Kitchen, Living room, Bedroom 1, Garage, Loft
Two-level: Kitchen > Top drawer, Kitchen > Bottom cupboard, Garage > Shelving unit, Garage > Workbench
Mixed: Some rooms have sub-locations, others don’t — whatever makes sense for your home.
Renaming a location
- Go to Locations
- Tap the location you want to rename
- Tap Edit
- Change the name
- Tap Save
Renaming a location updates it everywhere it’s referenced in your inventory.
Merging locations
If you have two locations that should be one:
- Edit the items in one location to move them to the other
- Delete the now-empty location
There isn’t a direct “merge” function yet — this is on our roadmap.
Deleting a location
A location can only be deleted when it contains no items. Move or delete all items in the location first, then:
- Go to Locations
- Tap the location
- Tap Edit > Delete location
